Working Woman was first published in November 1976. The monthly magazine and its sister publication Working Mother  founded in 1979, were sold by McCall Publications to Time Inc’s magazine division in 1986, but were later spun off.  As the names imply, the magazine spoke to the growing number of working women, unlike traditional women's magazines which then focused on women's roles as wives and mothers, or on fashion.

Monica was appointed in 1984 Assistant Treasurer of Time Inc., the world’s largest media and entertainment company. It had long been the world’s most successful publishing company and had also recently become the acknowledged leader in cable television,  as the creator of HBO, Cinemax and the owner of ATC. Monica handled the acquisition in 1986 of these two magazine titles in a joint venture, for Time Inc’s magazine division.
