President – Monali Media LLC 1990 – Present
- Manage private investment company seeking media acquisitions, partnerships and investments. Direct $50M+ portfolio including real estate, equity, hedge funds, and partnerships. Some consulting.
Publishing Director – Capital Cities/ABC (became Disney-ABC) 1987 – 1990
- Ran three magazines for Fairchild Publications, with full editorial and bottom-line responsibility. Doubled profits while turning around ENTRÉE and repositioning Home Fashions. AP then Publisher for launch of newsstand and subscription travel weekly. As director of Fairchild Video, produced videos based on Fairchild’s titles.
Assistant Treasurer, Corporate Officer – Time Inc. (became Time Warner) 1985 – 1987
- Youngest officer of world’s then largest media company. Restructured balance sheet, quadrupling the company’s borrowing capacity. Helped execute major acquisitions and divestitures: joint ventured cable unit, bought magazine company, sold book unit, spun off forest products subsidiary, took ATC public.
Director, Vice President – Video Group, Time Inc. 1980 – 1985
- As Director of Strategic Planning, coordinated with HBO, Cinemax, and ATC to assess all new cable, broadcast, satellite and digital ventures. Advocated launching PPV, DBS, financial news channel, women’s entertainment channel. Commissioned market, audience and technology research. (Reported to Nick Nicholas and Jeff Bewkes).
- As Board member of USA Network, was instrumental in acquiring 1/3rd ownership of fledgling network for Time Inc., then helped reorganize distribution and programming to become #2 cable network (1981-1985).
- As Vice President, TVIS, incubated and tested potential new interactive businesses for Time Inc., including teletext, videotext (pre-Internet) and video games. Pioneered technology and content. (Reported to Jerry Levin).
- As Manager of Financial Analysis for Time Life Films and Time Life Television (1981-1982), planned backward integration into video entertainment, feature movies, network TV production, TV syndication, BBC TV co-productions.
- As Business Manager, Time Life Video (1980-1981), was pioneer in videocassette and DVD business, acquiring rights, selling through retail and mail order.
Journalist, Editor, Producer – London and New York 1973 – 1978
- Press Officer United Nations. Set up newswire service for Third World countries.
- Features sub-editor for TV Times, the youngest at UK’s 2nd largest circulation weekly.
- Editor, The Chemical Engineer, successfully repositioned and redesigned staid technical magazine.
- Garrett Johnson & Associates: formed partnerships, sold ads to raise funds for charities.
- Associate Producer, MultiMedia Ent, co-produced TV revival of Strindberg play.
