USA Network is the second largest American basic cable channel now reaching 90 million households, currently owned by Comcast's NBCUniversal. It was originally launched in 1977 as one of the first national sports cable television channels, before being relaunched as USA Network in 1980. In 1981 it was acquired by a joint venture between two movie studios and Time Inc’s Video Group, owner of HBO, when it was transformed into a 24/7 broad appeal network of movies, cartoons, sport, reruns, series and women’s programing.
Monica in 1982 joined the Board of the joint venture between Time Inc, Paramount Pictures and United Artists/MCA. Monica contributed to the strategic re-alignment of its programming line-up as well as to its spectacular growth. USA Network became the second largest cable network in the US, while Monica became the in-house expert and advocate of ad-supported cable networks at Time/HBO/ATC.
