In the late 1980s, the American public took to the skies.  Travel increasingly appealed to the masses.  Several glossy monthly magazines were launched to whet the public’s appetite for armchair travel to exotic destinations.  Travel Today was created by Fairchild Publications in 1987 to respond to the surge in demand for short trips and spontaneous travel, stimulated by special airfares and holiday packages.  Travel Today was designed for real travelers short of time and money who sought adventure,  fun in the sun, beaches and snow. It was published weekly with up-to-date fares and practical offerings, and was sold on newsstands and by subscription. During the 1990s, the internet, though still in its infancy,  proved better tailored than newspapers or other publications for consumers to seek airfare and destination information or images

Monica was hired by Cap Cities /ABC to join the Fairchild Publications unit to help develop and launch this new magazine in 1987.  Starting as Associate Publisher, she soon was appointed Publisher, to adapt the business model and refocus on building a subscription business. The birth of her first child in 1988 interrupted the plans.
