An Octoroon is the story of doomed love. It has all the elements of a good melodrama; murder, threatened poverty, a thwarted love affair and suicide, set in the Deep South.  First seen at the Soho Rep, the play was written by new talent, Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins.  It transferred to the bigger stage and wider audience of TFANA in 2014, directed by Sarah Benson, and was then taken up and produced by the National Theatre in London.

The play first opened at the Barrow St Theatre, NY. An Octoroon is an old term for someone who is one eighth black.

Monica, as a prominent member of the TFANA Board, advocated alongside Chairman Terry Christiansen that An Octoroon be added last minute to the theatre’s season.
